I expected to wake up as a ghost. Instead, I surfaced from the pool in Janet’s garden, coughing and spluttering, drenched but alive. My vision wavered as I lifted my head, seeing Puck hurrying towards me. “Holly!”

I dragged myself to the bank. “Where’d the Scourge go?”

“He flew off,” said Roseanne. “Soon as he dropped you.”

“What?” I tilted my head to look up at the sky and saw the faintest shadow of a winged form disappearing into the clouds. Shakily, I climbed to my feet, seeing that Ilsa, Hazel, Darrow, Morgan, and Pepper had all come outside while Janet watched from the doorway of the cottage.

“How did he find us?” I directed my question more at Janet than the others. “I thought you were hidden from him. Does the Scourge know where you live?”

“I’d say yes.” Morgan gave Janet a distrustful look. “He must have known we were here, at the very least.”

“The god is enraged,” she said. “He has likely been tracking you since you summoned and angered him. Until now, he has not been able to find my location.”

“You think he’ll come back for you?” If so, then we’d brought him here ourselves. But why did he leave?

“I think this house is no longer a safe haven for any of us,” Janet said. “You always intended to leave, did you not?”

“We have to,” I said. “The Scourge… before he dropped me, he said something weird.”

“Said what?” Ilsa asked.

I repeated his words: “All will be revealed on the longest night, and all that was broken will be set right.”

“Sounds like a faerie riddle to me,” Hazel remarked. “The longest night… that rings a bell.”

“The winter solstice,” Janet said.

A chill raced down my spine. “Is that significant? To the gods, I mean? I know it’s the night when Winter fae are at their strongest.”

“On the longest night of the year, the faerie and mortal realms overlap,” said Janet. “The Scourge received his sacrifices on a similar night.”

“The Wild Hunt mentioned it too.” A suspicion struck me like a thunderclap. “They can’t be working together.”

“It certainly would not be the first time,” said Janet. “I will make my preparations to leave before the Ancient returns.”

“Or you can actually help us,” said Morgan.

Her expression clouded. “I am no fighter, let alone against a being that cannot be destroyed by mortal hands.”

“You drew us here,” said Hazel. “You brought this on yourself.”

I wasn’t sure I agreed, but I’d come here hoping for a solution and instead narrowly escaped death at the god’s hands. “Where’s the quickest route to the Ley Line? I’m not going back into that forest.”

Janet pointed towards a field to the left of her cottage. “A short distance away. Do be careful.”

She didn’t need to tell us twice. While she retreated into her home, we left the back garden via a creaky metal gate and made our way across the hillside separating the stone cottage from the rest of the village.

When we veered into the neighbouring field, it didn’t take long before we came across the Ley Line’s shimmering presence.
